LOCSP Press Release – Friday 6th June 2008
PLAYING WITH WORDS AT LEYTON ORIENT
Today saw Chapel End Junior School from Walthamstow visit Brisbane Road to celebrate the end of their ten-week Playing with Words (PWW) initiative with a ground tour and meeting two very special guests.
Leyton Orient First Team Manager Martin Ling and Assistant Manager Dean Smith took time out from planning their assault on League One next season to present the lucky youngsters with their completion certificates and medals.
As part of the Leyton Orient’s Community Sports Programme (LOCSP) education programme, PWW is a school-based initiative which sees Football League clubs challenge primary and secondary school classes to read 100 books within the space of a term.
PWW is delivered by LOCSP in conjunction with the Football Foundation as part of a partnership with the Football League, National Literacy Trust, DCSF, Professional Footballers Association and Puffin Books.
Each school receives brand new books as inspiring reading resources and for every book read by a pupil one club crest sticker is added to a giant PWW club wall chart. As the group get closer and closer to their class target the pupils become more and more motivated to read! Pupils also record their reading choices and write their own book reviews in their personal PWW Reading Journals.
Schools taking part this year with LOCSP were Chapel End Junior, Chingford Hall Primary and Chase Lane Primary.
This month saw pupils from two classes at Chapel End and a class from Chingford Hall achieve their target of reading a hundred books in a term, with some pupils managing 12 books towards their class total!
LOCSP Senior Education Development Officer Andree Selner said:
“The scheme is an excellent idea, helping us to work with schools that geographically we have not been able to reach with Playing for Success.
“The pupils worked hard to get their 100 books total and particularly enjoyed the selection of books supplied by the programme.
“Having the manager and assistant manager come down to make the presentation was the icing on the cake!”
Leyton Orient Football Club Manager Martin Ling said:
"Dean and I were delighted to present the youngsters with their medals and certificates for their participation in the Playing with Words scheme.
"Reading 100 books between them in a term is a great achievement and I hope they have now been bitten by the reading bug.
"Football can be a great driver behind learning and it was great to see the pride in the kids' faces at completing this scheme."
Anita Bajaj Teacher at Chapel End Primary School said:
“We’ve been taking part in the Playing with Words scheme for the past ten weeks and as a reward we have been on a ground tour. The scheme has been brilliant and the children were really enthusiastic and excited about reading the large selection of books on offer.
“As soon as the scheme was introduced and the books were presented, the children were really enthused to read more than one book and as we only had the books for one term it meant that they were eager to read their books, write a review and share what they had read and then move on to the next one - the books that were provided are really good.
“Leyton Orient being involved is a big incentive for these children and the sticker chart was a good way of getting them interested as well.
“The fact that the manager and assistant manager of Leyton Orient FC have taken time to come and present the certificates and medals really means a lot to us all – especially the kids, who were really excited about it.
“We are absolutely, definitely going to get involved again and all the kids are talking about it. Reading is really important at school and this way of doing it makes it really interesting.”
